The Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) commends the Minister of Public Safety and the Federal Government for the official proclamation of National Firefighters Memorial Day to be observed nationally the second Sunday of each September.

While the sector holds recognition ceremonies, the Federal Government’s official proclamation is more than a symbolic gesture. "Recognizing the fallen is both for those who have lost their lives and left families bereft in service of community and a statement of the Government’s recognition and support for those firefighters and their families who provide essential services to our communities despite the risks of death and occupational illnesses resulting either from injury or repeated exposure”. Says Chief Ken Block, President of the CAFC and Fire Chief for the Edmonton Fire Service.

“Seeing flags at half-mast on federal buildings this year and in the future, will remind all Canadian policy makers and the public of the steps we all have to take to keep our communities, and those who serve them, safe”.  He adds.
