News of Canadian Fallen Firefighters Monument Welcomed by Fire Chiefs
Ottawa, September 15, 2009 –Yesterday’s announcement that the Government of Canada will financially support erection of a national monument in Ottawa to honour firefighters and their officers who have died either in the line of duty or through a job-related disease was welcomed by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC).
CAFC’s President is Calgary Fire Chief Bruce Burrell. He particularly recognized the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (CFFF) for its dedication to the dream of a monument in Ottawa’s Parliamentary Precinct. “Without the determination of the CFFF and the generosity of the federal government, the monument would never have become a reality,” he said.
“The total cost of the monument is estimated at $4.5 million. While CAFC has made monthly contributions to the monument fund, it was the $2,5 million announced today by the Government of Canada that turned a dream into a reality” Fire Chief Burrell added. Sunday September 13 saw representatives of the Fire Services from across Canada join together on Parliament Hill in Ottawa to honour the memory of the 970 Canadian firefighting personnel who have paid the ultimate price to protect their fellow citizens.
“There could be nothing more welcome at this time for the families, friends and comrades of the fallen than the news that there will soon be a permanent fallen firefighters monument in Ottawa” said Chief Burrell.
